Today I took a trip to the Revolutionary War Veterans Association’s Project Appleseed in Corona, California to check out the sport of shooting. When the ST4K crew arrived it was lunchtime. During the lunch break a few of the main camp instructors did what Project Appleseed is all about, which is telling the untold stories of heros in America’s fight for freedom. This is when you hear stories of heros that you most likely haven’t heard before. The history aspect of Project Appleseed is what makes Project Appleseed different from all other shooting programs.
After lunch it was time for me to shoot the first gun of my life, which was a Revolutionary War model rifle that packed a mighty kick. All the people were soooo nice they taught me how to shoot and showed me everything I need to know to be my best - which wasn’t very good compared to everyone else.
After I met and talked to a few top and young shooters, it was my turn to shoot a modern day .22 rifle. I’m not a huge fan of guns but everyone was so helpful. First, I had to go through the safety instructions. Then Pippi and 22CalGirl helped me to load and shoot the rifle. I shot 10 shots, I think, but I only hit the redcoat paper once, but I was still pretty happy with myself. By my third round I was looking pretty good.
Project Appleseed is for all ages. The history focus is unique and interesting. Project Appleseed is in all 50 states and growing at an amazing rate. Check out a local shoot near you by visiting www.appleseedusa.org. You don’t need any experience. You don’t even need a rifle. The trained instructors will help you out and loan you a rifle. It was a really cool experience and I’d recommend it to everyone.
